The sudden death of Christian Dior in October of 1957 found control of the prestigious House of Dior in the hands of 21-year-old Yves Saint Laurent. Despite the obvious reservations of the fashion world Saint Laurent’s first collection was a knock-out.

The Spring-Summer collection of 1958 brought about what Time magazine termed “the first big change in female fashions since the New Look in 1947”. The introduction of the chemise-sack dress, or what Saint Laurent termed the ‘Ligne Trapèze’ (Trapeze Line), foretold the drastic changes fashion was about to undergo as it entered the 1960s.

This evening dress, L’Eléphant Blanc, was a center piece of Saint Laurent’s groundbreaking 1958 Spring-Summer collection for Dior.
